Explore Kelowna by E-Bike: A Two-Wheeled Tour Through Wine Country and Downtown Charm

Kelowna has a way of pulling people outdoors. Set along the shores of sparkling Okanagan Lake and surrounded by rolling vineyards, orchards, and pine-covered hills, it’s a destination known equally for natural beauty and its world-class wine scene. But beyond the tasting rooms and lakefront patios, there’s another way to experience the region—one that’s active, flexible, and surprisingly easy to navigate, even for beginners.

Enter the e-bike. With pedal assist doing the heavy lifting, you can cover more ground, quite literally, without sacrificing scenery. From lakeside paths to vineyard-lined backroads, e-biking opens up a wider range of Kelowna attractions while keeping things relaxed and approachable.

And with The Royal Kelowna as your base right downtown, you’re perfectly positioned to roll straight into the heart of it all.

A Flexible Way to Explore Kelowna

If you’re new to e-biking or just want a well-planned route, Lakeside Eco-Sports makes it easy to get started. The company offers guided and self-guided options, along with hourly rentals for those who prefer to explore at their own pace. Beyond cycling, it also runs walking and hiking tours, food-focused experiences, and even hands-on activities like axe throwing.

The e-bike lineup, though, is where things really shine. Whether you’re after a classic Kelowna wine tour, a scenic ride along the lake, or something a little more offbeat, Lakeside has an option to match.

E-Bike Wine Tour with Tastings & Lunch

For a classic Okanagan experience, this e-bike guided wine tour hits all the right notes. Available in both guided and self-guided formats, the route takes you through East Kelowna countryside to three distinct stops: Spearhead Winery, Hidden Vines Winery, and Meadow Vista Honey Wines.

Each stop offers a curated tasting, giving you a feel for the region’s range, from traditional varietals to small-batch honey wines. A relaxed bistro lunch at Meadow Vista rounds out the experience, and panniers on your bike make it easy to carry any bottles you pick up along the way. With about five hours, it’s a well-paced introduction to wine country without the need for a car.

Okanagan Lake Views Guided E-Bike Tour with Picnic

If scenery is your priority, this guided ride delivers. The route winds past popular hiking spot Knox Mountain Park and along the shoreline toward Paul’s Tomb, with frequent stops to take in sweeping lake views. Along the way, your guide shares context on local ecology and history, adding depth. The tour wraps up with a locally sourced, bento-style picnic paired with small-batch sodas.

Guided E-Bike City Highlights Tour

Short on time but still want to immerse in some top Kelowna activities? This 2.5-hour ride offers a quick but thorough look at Kelowna’s core, ideal for first-time visitors especially. Designed around the energy of the Montanas Brier, Canada’s national men’s curling championship, the route blends culture, history, and waterfront scenery.

Stops include the lookout on Knox Mountain Drive, the Kelowna Sails boardwalk, and green spaces like Rotary Marsh Park. You’ll also pass through heritage sites such as Father Pandosy Mission and the Laurel Packinghouse, with time at beaches and gardens along the way.

Kelowna E-Bike Gold Panning Adventure

For something more hands-on, this four-hour tour heads out to Scenic Canyon, where you’ll step back in time to frontier days. After cycling through forested trails, you’ll meet a guide who walks you through the basics of panning in a creek renowned for its history. All equipment is provided for the 90-minute session—long enough to get the hang of it and maybe even spot a few flakes.

E-Bike Myra Canyon Adventure

If you want to venture beyond the highlights, this experience is a standout. It begins with a ride from your hotel doorstep in a fully electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz to Myra Canyon Trestles, part of the historic Kettle Valley Railway.

From there, you’ll set out on a self-guided ride along a 12.5-kilometer stretch of rail trail, crossing 18 wooden trestle bridges and passing through two tunnels carved right into the rock. An audio guide adds context as you go, covering everything from early railway engineering to the surrounding landscape. It’s an easy, mostly flat ride—but the views make it feel much more grand.

E-Bike Bee Tour with Tastings and Lunch

This self-guided option offers a different take on a Kelowna wine tour, with a focus on the behind-the-scenes: pollinators and local agriculture. As you ride, an audio guide explains the critical role bees play in the region’s vineyards and orchards. The experience centres around a visit to Meadow Vista Honey Wines, where you’ll sample both wine and honey products before settling in for lunch. Not only is it educational and slightly indulgent, it's a wonderful reminder of how interconnected Okanagan’s food and wine systems really are.

E-Bike Salmon Adventure

Running about three hours, this quieter tour follows the Mission Creek Greenway to Mission Creek Regional Park. Depending on the season, you may spot kokanee salmon navigating the spawning channels, a major highlight for wildlife enthusiasts or photographers. A pre-recorded audio guide fills in the details, explaining the fascinating salmon lifecycle and the importance of the creek within the local ecosystem.

Fat Tire E-Bike with Smokies, S’mores & Honey Wine

Even in cooler months, e-biking stays on the table in Kelowna. This seasonal winter and spring tour swaps standard bikes for fat-tire models designed for stability on mixed terrain, including snow and slush. The destination: an intimate, magical fireside setup at Meadow Vista Honey Wines. Once there, you’ll warm up with smokies (smoked sausage, for those who may not be in the know), toast s’mores, and sample honey wines in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Top Proposal Spots in Kelowna (That Aren't Cliché)

Kelowna has long been a go-to destination for wine lovers, lake days, and mountain views—but it’s also one of Canada’s most versatile destinations when it comes to popping the question.

With Okanagan Lake at its center, vineyards climbing the surrounding hills, and networks of trails weaving through the forest, canyon, and city alike, Kelowna offers proposal settings that suit every personality and relationship dynamic.

Whether you’re envisioning something quietly intimate, active and outdoorsy, or postcard-worthy without feeling staged, this city delivers. From sunrise summits to sunset paddles, these ideas go well beyond the obvious vineyard dinner or lakeside restaurant.

If you’re wondering where to propose in Kelowna without it being too predictable, stay right here.

1. An E-Bike Tour Through Kelowna’s Lesser-Known Trails

For couples who bond over movement—and perhaps a bit of friendly competition—hopping on e-bikes is one of the most unique proposal ideas Kelowna offers. The area's ever-growing number of trails makes it easy to plan a scenic ride without committing to a full-day endurance effort.

Easygoing routes like the Lakeside Wine Route and Westside Wine Trail are especially romantic, with vineyard views, scenic pullouts, and plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or celebratory toast. Knox Mountain certainly isn't a hidden gem, but its proximity to downtown makes it a convenient option if you want panoramic views without a big production.

For a longer, more immersive ride, follow Okanagan Lake’s waterfront paths and connect to the Mission Creek Greenway. The mixed paved and gravel trail system winds through the city along the creek, offering shaded stretches, bridges, and quiet corners that feel surprisingly removed from town. More adventurous riders can head across the bridge to West Kelowna for heart-pumping terrain at Rose Valley Regional Park or Smith Creek or find fantastic views near Predator Ridge and the trail network around Ellison Provincial Park.

2. Mount Boucherie Summit at Sunrise

Mount Boucherie delivers one of Kelowna’s biggest effort-to-reward payoffs with a relatively short hike, especially if you time it right. Arriving at the summit just after sunrise means softer light and—most importantly—fewer people. It should come as no surprise that this is one of the most popular hikes in Kelowna

From the top, you’ll see vineyards stretching across West Kelowna, Okanagan Lake reflecting the early morning glow, and layer after layer of hills rolling toward the horizon. It’s serene, grounding, and naturally offers an “on top of the world” feeling, making it ideal for a proposal that’s heartfelt rather than flashy. Bring a thermos of coffee or tea, and linger for a few minutes with your shared secret before heading back down.

3. Kasugai Gardens

Tucked behind Kelowna’s City Hall, Kasugai Gardens is a peaceful Japanese garden that many visitors miss entirely. Designed to reflect Kelowna’s sister-city relationship with Kasugai, Japan, the space features koi ponds, stone lanterns, arched bridges, and impeccably manicured trees.

Despite its central location, the garden feels idyllic and almost remote, especially on weekday mornings or early evenings. It’s a great option if you’re looking for where to propose in Kelowna that's both quiet and understated, without leaving downtown.

Because it’s small, timing matters—aim for off-peak hours for more privacy. Also note that the gardens close in the winter, from late October through mid-March. Pair it with a celebratory walk along the waterfront or dinner nearby once you get a "yes."

4. On a Private Paddleboard at Sunset

Kelowna’s calm evenings on Okanagan Lake much of the year create near perfect conditions for a paddleboard proposal. As the sun drops behind the hills, the lake often turns glassy, reflecting pastel skies and vineyard-lined shores.

Rent boards from Kelowna Paddle Centre, then paddle just far enough from shore to feel removed from civilisation. Anchoring or drifting quietly while the sky changes colour creates a naturally intimate, inherently romantic setting—no audience required. Now, keep it simple: a few words, a ring (safely secured!), and a plan to head back to shore for a celebratory drink. It’s low-key, personal, and undeniably memorable.

5. At a U-Pick Farm During Cherry Season

Cherry season in the Okanagan is short but sweet, quite literally, typically running from late June into July. U-pick farms around Kelowna offer a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere with rows of beautiful fruit trees, open skies, and often, picnic tables or beautiful patios where you can quietly ask the big question without causing a scene. Proposing mid-harvest feels spontaneous and joyful, especially if you’ve already spent a couple of hours picking ripe fruit together.

6. Myra Canyon Trestles

The Myra Canyon section of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is iconic for a reason, but it still manages to feel thoughtful and unrushed. The wide, gravel path crosses a series of restored wooden trestles suspended above the canyon, offering sweeping views without requiring technical hiking or biking skills.

Plan your proposal on one of the quieter trestles, ideally earlier in the morning or later in the day, avoiding peak time. Walking or cycling the trail together builds anticipation, and the setting simultaneously naturally slows you down. It’s one of the best places to propose in Kelowna for couples who love the outdoors but want something accessible, scenic, and timeless. As a major bonus, if you're interested in hiring a photographer to capture the moment, there are countless places for them to hide.

7. Celebrate Like Royals

After the proposal, there’s no better place to settle in and celebrate than The Royal Kelowna. Our luxurious resort is located in downtown Kelowna, backing directly onto Okanagan Lake. It’s an easy home base for planning the perfect moment and enjoying everything that comes after.

From the luxurious rooftop infinity pool and hot tubs to in-room spa services and waterfront access, The Royal makes it simple to turn your engagement into a full romantic getaway. Check out the rooms here.

In a destination this diverse, the perfect proposal isn’t about following a script—it’s about choosing a setting that feels like the two of you. Congratulations, and we can't wait to host you.

A Local’s Guide to Experiencing Kelowna’s Wine Country by E-Bike

Written By: Stacy Miller

After moving to Kelowna more than a decade ago for its natural beauty, I still find myself in awe of it. The last two summers I’ve worked as an e-bike tour guide at Lakeside Eco-Sports in the heart of downtown and a ten-minute walk from The Royal Kelowna. You might think riding the same routes all summer would get boring, but it never does.

I love starting my ride with feeling that warm Okanagan sun on my skin, the lake glistening beside me as a cool breeze rolls off the water. Cruising along Mission Creek, listening to birdsong as I pass horse ranches. At the crest of the hill when I see the lake stretching out below, it reminds me why I moved here in the first place.

If you want more out of your wine tasting than a van ride, Lakeside Eco-Sports offers a nature experience through Kelowna’s south-east wine trail. Paired with three truly local wineries, It’s the perfect activity to add to your vacation in Kelowna for a unique wine tasting experience. The bike tour takes four to five hours and includes three wine tastings and lunch.

The team at Lakeside Eco-Sports sets you up with everything you need for your day out. Each e-bike comes equipped with wine bottle carrying panniers and a phone mount with charger. You can choose self-guided or hire a guide. For self-guided, you are provided with navigation through an app. If you hire a guide they take care of navigation, check in at tastings, assist with the bikes, and offer full storytelling about Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley.

ABOUT THE ROUTE

The route departs from downtown and is designed to use bikes lanes, nature trails, and low-traffic roads. The ride starts along the waterfront and through lovely residential areas. You’ll connect to a nature trail following the creek that will lead you to vineyards and orchards. At the highest point of the ride there is a photo stop with a panoramic view of the city and lake. The ride is 30km, with 300m elevation, which feels like a breeze with the help of the e-bike.

During the tour, you will visit three locally owned winery stops, each run by passionate people who live and work in the Kelowna community. Every stop offers its own unique way to experience the flavors and lifestyle of the Okanagan. As well, depending on the time of year, there is an optional stop at a roadside farm shop to pick up some amazing Kelowna produce.

Hidden Vines Family Estate:

A small family run winery where you get to see everything about how they run their vineyard. They don’t book with large tour vans; this is exclusive to the Lakeside Eco-Sports bike tour. They offer intimate tastings, given by a member of the family, right where the wine is grown and made.

Spearhead Winery:

Winner of multiple best winery awards. Their outdoor terrace overlooks the lake and vineyards. Spearhead Winery is a laid-back wine tasting experience with award-winning wine and highly knowledgeable staff. The best of both worlds.

Meadow Vista Honey Wines:

For something a little different, Meadow Vista Honey Wines make mead, aka, honey wine. Departing from traditional mead, they make a variety of light honey wines blended with a variety flavours. Lunch is served at Meadow Vista’s farm-to-table bistro with sandwiches, pizza, and charcuterie made with locally sourced ingredients.

This experience is more than wine tastings. Each winery is an authentic and unique experience bringing insight into what Kelowna is growing in its community. You spend the day outside, in the fresh air, enjoying a bike ride. Taking in the sights, smells, and sounds that the countryside has to offer. It’s a day of exploration you won’t forget.

Cider, Craft Beer & Cocktails: Kelowna's Other Sips You Shouldn't Miss

Kelowna may sit at the heart of Okanagan wine country, but wine is only one chapter of this particular story. Beyond vineyard rows and tasting rooms, the city has quietly built one of Western Canada’s most impressive craft beverage scenes. Kelowna actually boasts the highest number of breweries per capita in Western Canada! That density shows—especially in the North End, where multiple stops are clustered within easy walking distance.

Wine is wonderful for countless reasons, there's no question about that. But after a long hike, a paddle on Okanagan Lake, or a full day of exploring, sometimes what you really want is to toast with a crisp beer, a tart cider, or a well-made cocktail. From laid-back taprooms to experimental producers and award-winning distilleries, Kelowna offers plenty of fun things to do for travelers who like to sip locally.

Here’s a look at some of the standout spots worth building into your plans when deciding what to do in Kelowna.

Best Local Breweries (and Other Bevvies) in Kelowna

1. Jackknife Brewing

Known for its unapologetically "weird" beers (their description, not ours), Jackknife is a go-to for folks who like bold flavors and experimentation. The taproom also makes excellent pizza, making it an easy place to linger longer than planned.

2. Kettle River Brewing

Sharing a space with Jackknife, garage-esque Kettle River is beloved for its ever-changing, creative food menu; it's arguably one of the strongest brewery kitchens in town. The vibe is relaxed, the beer is solid, and dogs are welcome. If you pop in on a weekend, try the ever-popular Big Board special or Sunday brunch, with a menu crafted by Food Network celeb Chef Brock Bowes.

3. Vice & Virtue Brewing

Vice & Virtue’s Love Potion raspberry sour has a cult-like local following, often cited as one of the best sours in Kelowna. Pair your pint with bites like pork belly burnt ends or Koren BBQ pork sliders, and save room for the Love Potion Tiramisu.

4. Buffalo Rouge Brewing

This vegan brewery surprises first-time visitors with how bold and satisfying both the beers and food menu are. Even non-vegan drinkers often leave impressed by both the flavours and creativity. The icing on the cake? They offer several gluten-free options, as well.

5. Unleashed Brewing

Everything here is dog-themed, from the decor to the beer names—and dogs are even allowed inside, not just on the patio. The star of the show is the London Dog, a clever (and tasty) vanilla-and–Earl Grey-infused beer inspired by a traditional London Fog tea. If you order a flight, it comes in a dog bowl–style tray. Check their socials for a rotating lineup of local food trucks.

6. Rustic Reel Brewing Company

Rustic Reel offers a little of a lot of things: not just craft beer, but a coffee bar, weeknight happy hour, and even an event space. Locals come here for the best nachos in town, but a lesser-known highlight is the Basil, Broccoli & Zucchini Gnocchi.

7. Railside Brewing

Located right along the historic Kelowna Rail Trail, Railside keeps things casual with dependable beer (as well as cider and seltzer, plus some gluten-free varieties) and a beloved food truck serving everything from ramen to fried chicken. It's both dog- and bike-friendly, with plenty of bike parking.

8. The Office Brewery

For something a little different, The Office is perhaps best known for its cocktail flights (don't sleep on the dessert flight, either), which rotate seasonally. The brewery is also right downtown, close to several other breweries and distilleries—and a pleasant 15-minute walk from The Royal.

9. Copper Brewing Company

One of a handful of local breweries in Kelowna outside downtown, Copper Brewing is in the Landmark District. It stands out for sheer selection, with nearly 20 beers on tap, ideal for trying a couple of flights to find your next favourite.

10. Red Bird Brewing

This is a go-to for groups, with a huge space, an extensive beer list, and consistently good wood-fired, Neopolitan-style pizza. The large outdoor area often hosts live music in the warmer months.

11. BNA Brewing

BNA defies easy categorization in the best way. It’s part brewery, part bowling alley, and part nightlife hotspot. Think Skee-Ball, Pac-Man and other retro arcade games, plus smash burgers, rounding out the classic brewery experience.

12. Soma Craft Cidery

Set on a picturesque property with alpacas, acres of orchards, and a spacious picnic area, Soma is worth the trip for the setting alone. The cider is excellent, and the modern building and grounds make it a relaxing daytime stop.

13. Wild Ambition Brewing

For the adventurous folks, Wild Ambition focuses exclusively on barrel-aged, bottle-conditioned mixed-fermentation ales. It’s the only brewery in BC’s interior dedicated to this style, and the results are creative, complex, and often (pleasantly) surprising.

14. Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery

One of the region’s most celebrated distilleries, Okanagan Spirits produces award-winning (the distillery took home a staggering 11 gold medals at the 2025 World Spirits Awards in Germany) whisky, gin, vodka, brandy, fruit liqueurs, aquavit, and even Canada’s first genuine absinthe. Drop-in tastings are always available, while reservation-only seated tours offer deeper dives into gin, whisky, cocktail making, or farm-to-flask production rooted in local terroir.

Toast Kelowna Beverage-Focused Getaway at The Royal Kelowna

For travelers interested in distilleries, local breweries in Kelowna, and everything in between (including wine, of course!), staying central makes all the difference. The Royal Kelowna puts you within easy reach of downtown and the North End, making it a convenient home base for sampling Kelowna’s other sips—one well-earned drink at a time.

And if you’re planning to visit multiple stops, don’t overlook the BC Ale Trail. The app lets you check in at participating breweries and distilleries—many included in this list—to earn points that can be redeemed for fun perks like merchandise or discounts.

Wineries You Can't Miss Near The Royal Kelowna

A trip to Kelowna isn’t complete without spending time among its 40-plus wineries, and staying at The Royal Kelowna makes it easy.

Within minutes, you can walk to a tasting room, bike to a funky, art-filled estate, or drive to a world-class winery perched high above Okanagan Lake. The region's mix of iconic names and offbeat gems means there’s truly something for every type of wine lover—and even non-wine drinkers!

Some of the onsite restaurants and live entertainment offerings invite visitors to linger, regardless of what they drink (or don't).

Here are some of the best Kelowna wineries to put at the top of your list:

Best Kelowna Wineries to Visit

1. Sandhill Wines

Distance from The Royal: 5-minute walk

You don’t need a car to reach Sandhill—it’s the closest winery to The Royal Kelowna, just a short stroll downtown. Sandhill is best known as the first winery in the Okanagan to experiment with single-vineyard winemaking, producing bottles that highlight the distinct character of each growing site. Its popular Small Lots program still showcases these unique wines today. Visitors also love Sandhill’s relaxed tasting room, where you can order by the glass or catch Friday evening happy hour with live music.

Pricing: Tastings start at $16; wines are also available by the glass, and there are other 'Sip & Bite' options with food pairings

2. Mission Hill Family Estate

Distance from The Royal: (~16-minute drive)

It sounds cliché, we know, but it's accurate: Mission Hill isn’t just a winery, it’s a destination. Sitting high above West Kelowna with sweeping lake views, this estate has been named Winery of the Year multiple times in the WineAlign National Wine Awards. The property is expansive, with striking architecture, landscaped courtyards, and a museum-quality art collection worth browsing pre- or post-tasting.

Experiences range from seated tastings to in-depth tours, and the onsite Restaurant at Mission Hill offers fine dining on a terrace overlooking the valley. Plan to spend at least a few hours here.

Pricing: Seated tastings start at $40; tour and tasting $125

3. Quails' Gate Winery

Distance from The Royal: (~13-minute drive)

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com - Quails' Gate Estate Winery

One of British Columbia's oldest wineries, Quails’ Gate, remains family-owned and continues to be a leader in the Okanagan wine scene. Their Stewart Family Reserve Chardonnay is a standout, but you’ll find a wide range of reds and whites worth sampling.

Beyond the wine, the estate features pétanque courts (available by reservation) and a farm-to-table restaurant, Old Vines, with a seasonal wine-led menu inspired by local Okanagan producers.

Pricing: $20 Estate Series tasting; $35 Reserve Collection or Plume tasting; $50 Ailm Estate tasting

4. CedarCreek Estate Winery

Distance from The Royal: (~20-minute drive)

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com - CedarCreek Winery

CedarCreek combines excellent wine with equally impressive views. The tasting room and terrace look out over vineyard rows and shimmering water, and the winery’s restaurant, Home Block, is a destination in its own right. In fact, you'll find many locals consider CedarCreek not only one of the best wineries in Kelowna, but also one of the best places for dinner. The menu is built around ingredients sourced from nearby farms, paired carefully with CedarCreek wines.

Keep an eye out for the Highland cows grazing on the property, adding a quirky, endearing touch that makes the experience even more memorable.

Pricing: Tastings start at $35; wines are also available by the glass for $15

5. Summerhill Pyramid Winery

Distance from The Royal: (~18-minute drive)

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com

Summerhill is one of the Okanagan’s most visited wineries, thanks to its combination of lake views, sprawling property, and organic wines. Known for its Syrah and other bold reds, the winery is also certified organic and places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Visitors can enjoy tastings in the signature pyramid-shaped wine cellar, dine on the patio restaurant with lake views, or stroll the grounds.

Other experience highlights include sparkling wine sabering and a VIP sparkling wine tour.

Pricing: Tastings range from $15-25 per person

6. The Hatch

Distance from The Royal: (~12-minute drive)

If you like your wine with a side of personality, The Hatch is the place. This West Kelowna winery is known for its irreverent branding, eclectic decor, and friendly staff who make tastings as entertaining as they are informative.

The Hatch has a loyal following of locals and visitors who come for the lively hipster vibe, bold labels, and approachable wine list. It’s a casual, laid-back stop, one where you’ll feel just as comfortable hanging out for an hour (many people do!) as you will popping in for a quick flight.

Pricing: Tastings are $15 per person; waived with bottle purchase

7. The Vibrant Vine

Distance from The Royal: 15-minute drive/45-minute bike ride

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com

True to its name, The Vibrant Vine is one of the most colourful and playful wineries in Kelowna. On arrival, you’re handed a pair of 3-D glasses to view the artwork displayed throughout the property, making this less of a tasting room and more of an immersive experience. The winery has earned international recognition, including producing the 2013 “Best White Wine in the World.”

With three performance stages, multiple food options, and a lively atmosphere, The Vibrant Vine is a great choice for groups or anyone looking for something beyond the traditional tasting.

Pricing: General tastings start at $13.91

Tips for Your Wine Tour

  1. Plan transportation in advance. Kelowna wineries are spread out, and relying on cabs between them can be costly, time-consuming, and honestly, unreliable during busy seasons. Consider booking a wine tour, designating a driver, or even renting e-bikes if you’re only visiting one or two nearby wineries.

  2. Reserve ahead. Many, if not most, of the best Kelowna wineries, including Mission Hill and Quails’ Gate, require reservations for tastings or dining, especially in peak summer season.

  3. Stay central. Choosing accommodation like The Royal Kelowna puts you within easy reach of downtown wineries like Sandhill and a short drive from West Kelowna or Lakeshore estates.

A Food Lover's Guide to Kelowna: Best Farm-to-Table Eats

Perched right on the shores of Okanagan Lake, Kelowna sits in the heart of the fertile Okanagan Valley, a region where orchards, vineyards and farms thrive thanks to a mild, Mediterranean-esque climate and rich soil. The same conditions that make the area one of Canada’s premier wine regions also fuel a thriving foodie scene.

There are a number of outstanding farm-to-table restaurants in Kelowna. Here, ingredient quality takes centre stage over flashiness, with chefs sourcing directly from nearby farms (in some cases, their own!), foragers and markets.

From your base at The Royal Kelowna, you can easily explore this local food culture just steps, or a short drive, away.

Farm-to-Table Restaurants in Kelowna

1.     Waterfront Wines

1180 Sunset Dr #104, Kelowna, V1Y 9W6

Awarded “Okanagan’s Best Restaurant” by Vancouver Magazine for an impressive 12 consecutive years, Waterfront Wines is a clear standout among local restaurants. Chef and Sommelier Mark Filatow works closely with local producers to create inventive, seasonal dishes: mushrooms from What the Fungus, honey and produce from Arlo’s Honey Farm, organic stone-ground flour from Greencroft Gardens, Kootenay Meats and many others.

The menu evolves with what’s freshest, resulting in plates that are both refined and approachable. Pair your meal with a local wine list that’s as carefully curated as the food.

Note: due to the specific type of liquor license Waterfront holds, all guests must be 19 or older.

2.     Salt & Brick

243 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, V1Y 6N2

If you like surprises, Salt & Brick will quickly become one of your favourite local restaurants. This downtown eatery operates on a daily fresh sheet menu, with meals that often appear for just one night before a new variation takes their place. The focus is firmly on local food and, well, everything else, too—every single wine is sourced from the Okanagan, and seasonal ingredients drive the ever-changing share plates.

A recent menu included a 15-ounce BC Ribeye with tater tots made from local potatoes and a chimichurri made with locally-grown herbs, and Cheesy Linguine, made with local truffle Gouda Mornay and Parmesan.

The restaurant's legendary warm, knowledgeable service ensures you’ll feel more like a guest at a friend’s house than a customer and, as a bonus, it also regularly hosts winemaker dinners, local tap takeovers, and live music nights.

3.     Hillcrest Farm Market Cafe

700 Hwy 33 E, Kelowna, V1X 7W4

Attached to a working farm and market, Hillcrest Farm Market Café is as true to farm-to-table as it gets. The menu features breakfast staples like omelettes and pancakes, hearty soups, fresh sandwiches, and (the real star) Indian specialties.

Hillcrest's samosas and pakoras have a well-earned local following, and the marriage of butter chicken and Canadian signatures—Butter Chicken Poutine and Butter Chicken Pizza, for example—are unexpectedly elevated.

Many, if not most, dishes use produce grown just steps away, complemented by fair-trade Cherryhill coffee, best enjoyed on the pleasant, covered patio. After your meal, browse the market for fresh fruits, baked goods, preserves and ready-made soups to take home.

4.     Home Block at CedarCreek Estate Winery

5445 Lakeshore Rd, Kelowna, V1W 4S5

Home Block describes its approach as “terroir to table” rather than farm-to-table, crafting menus inspired and directed by the winery’s own gardens and surrounding producers.

Renowned Chef Neil Taylor takes a wine-first approach, building rustic, seasonal dishes that highlight the best of the Okanagan Valley, based on the wine. Expect wood-fired cooking and thoughtful wine pairings, from casual lunches to prix fixe dinners. The idea is that locals can come in as often as once per week and never order the same thing twice. Special experiences like the five-course Platinum Library Experience or “Trust the Chef” private dinners, held in the Aspect House, elevate the hyper-local, hyper-seasonal concept even further, offering adventurous diners multi-course meals that change with the day’s harvest.

5.     Roma Nord

421 Cawston Ave, Kelowna, V1Y 6Z1

A slice of Rome in the Okanagan, Roma Nord blends authentic, traditional Italian recipes with the freshest local Okanagan Valley produce. The owners both lived, studied, and worked in Rome before meeting in Kelowna, and their menus, which change almost daily, reflect a deep commitment to that culinary heritage.

Expect classic Roman pasta dishes (made from scratch in-house, of course), seasonal antipasti, and one of British Columbia’s largest selections of Italian wine. The intimate, bistro-style setting and genuine hospitality make it an ideal choice for lingering over a long, leisurely meal.

6.     The Hatching Post

2850 Boucherie Rd, West Kelowna, V1Z 2G8

Texas-style BBQ may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of farm-to-table restaurants in Kelowna, but The Hatching Post proves it belongs in the conversation.

All proteins, from brisket to pulled pork and chicken, are sourced from within British Columbia, and side dishes feature local produce like corn, arugula, yams, and potatoes. Even the hardwoods used in the smokers come from nearby, creating cleaner smoke and a smoother, more nuanced flavour.

Pair your plate with a flight or one of their craft beers, brewed in-house. You can even catch happy hour from 3:00 to 6:00 pm daily Monday through Friday, with both food and drink specials.

Savour the Okanagan Valley from The Royal Kelowna

Kelowna’s farm-to-table local food culture is one of its greatest draws (which is really saying something, since Okanagan Lake, the surrounding scenery, and the wine culture are all stars in their own right), and with so many exceptional restaurants nearby, you’ll never run out of new flavours to explore.

The Royal Kelowna is the perfect place to return to after a day of culinary adventures and Kelowna activities. This all-suite resort offers full kitchens, private balconies, and a rooftop pool and terrace overlooking Okanagan Lake, all in a prime downtown, walk-to-almost-everything location. From here, you can easily wander to local markets, enjoy lakeside strolls, and sample the very best of the Okanagan’s ingredient-driven dining scene. Book your stay today!

Fruit for the Picking: The Best U-Pick Farms in Kelowna

Sure, Kelowna may be most closely associated with its waterfront location on Okanagan Lake. And wine (of course). And its abundance of outdoor recreation. But in addition to all of that, it's a renowned fruit-growing destination—and we don't just mean grapes. It turns out, the same environmental factors that make this a premier wine region (namely, mild weather and rich, fertile soil) are also excellent for fruit farms, and there are no Kelowna activities more synonymous with summer than fruit picking.

If you're visiting this summer, consider spending a day checking out a truly local aspect of the Okanagan Valley. Bonus: if you're staying at The Royal Kelowna, all of these farms are within a short, scenic drive.

Pro tip: berries get hot (and therefore, unpleasantly squishy) when picked in the peak heat of the day. Go berry picking in the early morning or early evening for the best experience.

Keep in mind that Mother Nature dictates what grows and when, and it can change significantly from one season to the next. We strongly recommend calling each farm or checking their social media channels ahead of your visit to confirm open hours and availability. Also, be sure to wear close-toed, comfortable shoes and lather on sunscreen!

Bilga Farms

11.5 km/7.1 miles from The Royal Kelowna (18 minutes)

A smaller operation tucked in on Rutland Road among other farms in Kelowna, this spot is best known for its strawberry picking in early summer. Because strawberry season is relatively short, the farm gives patrons a choice: pick your own, or simply grab a ready-to-go flat from the farm stand. In addition to strawberries, Bilga Farms offers fresh vegetables throughout the year and is a popular destination for pumpkins come October.

Blind Rooster Berry Farm

15.4 km/9.6 miles from The Royal Kelowna (22 minutes)

The term "tiny but mighty" perfectly fits this 5-acre family farm. Blind Rooster offers a little of a lot of things, from u-pick haskap berries (a native Canada berry, also called honeyberries or sometimes blue honeysuckle) to rhubarb and Saskatoon berries. Saskatoons, also known as Juneberries, are quite similar to blueberries (and the process is identical to blueberry picking), antioxidant-rich and juicy. You can even purchase farm fresh eggs from a self-service stand. Bring your own containers, plus cash or cheque (no cards accepted).

Jay's Berry Farm

24.1 km/15 miles from The Royal Kelowna (30 minutes)

Practically around the corner from Rose Hill Orchard, Jay's strictly does berries but does them exceptionally well. Come here for a few different varieties of reasonably-priced blueberry picking ($3.50 per pound, with a $10 minimum per person) or pre-packed flats of blueberries by the pound. The blueberry season is short here, typically only 2–3 weeks in mid-July.

Kempf Orchards

12.1 km/7.5 miles from The Royal Kelowna (18 minutes)

Located in East Kelowna, Kempf Orchards offers nine varieties of u-pick cherries, including Rainier, Early Yellow, Stella, and Sour. There’s a $3 entry fee per person and a $1 charge per box (you can also bring your own). No reservations are needed, but weekends often reach capacity so expect a bit of a wait during peak times. Thanks to a wetter, milder winter, the 2025 fruit picking season is expected to start in early July and run longer than usual.

Kuipers Family Fruit Farm

10.1 km/6.3 miles from The Royal Kelowna (16 minutes)

A Kelowna staple since 1921, Kuipers offers all kinds of fruit picking: cherries, apricots, peaches, and plums as the season progresses. The orchard directly overlooks Okanagan Lake, making it one of the most scenic spots to pick fruit. Entry is $3 for all guests over age 10, and u-pick fruit is priced at an incredibly reasonable $3.50 per pound. The farm even provides a variety of containers, as well as pre-picked fruit for sale.

Mike & Lizzy's Cherry U-Pick

9.8 km/6 miles from The Royal Kelowna (16 minutes)

Located in Kelowna’s Lower Mission, cherries have been growing here since 1948. Six varietals include bings, vans, lapins, and Rainiers, which are available pre-picked only. The orchard is open seasonally, typically starting in July and from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, but of course, hours can change. Visitors note that the staff are exceptionally friendly, always happy to share tips on each variety and how to store them. Cash only.

Paynter's Fruit Market

14.7 km/9.1 miles from The Royal Kelowna (17 minutes)

This West Kelowna family farm offers a wide range of u-pick and pre-picked produce, from apples and pears to squash, herbs, lettuce, and more. The u-pick season starts mid-July with apricots, continuing through summer and fall with what's in season and ending with apples and pears in mid- to late October. The onsite market is well-stocked, and there’s a lovely coffee and ice cream shop with covered outdoor seating. Visitors can snap photos in a seasonal flower field, pick pumpkins in the fall, or book a 45-minute farm tour (May-October) to learn more about how food literally goes from farm to table. Paynter's also hosts occasional pop-up markets featuring other local makers and vendors.

Rose Hill Orchard

22.8 km/14 miles from The Royal Kelowna (27 minutes)

This one-stop shop is just north of Kelowna, in an area known as Lake Country. It has a u-pick orchard with apples, cherries, plums, and more, plus a craft cidery where you can buy bottles of cider or book a cider tasting. The farm also hosts several events onsite, from live music to farmers markets, festivals, and food trucks. Unique among fruit farms in Kelowna, Rose Hill lets visitors book a u-pick appointment online in advance.

Twin Oaks Organic Orchard

10.1 km/6.3 miles from The Royal Kelowna (16 minutes)

Near Kuipers, Twin Oaks offers certified organic u-pick cherries, apples, pears, apricots, peaches, plums, and berries. The orchard also pre-picks some fruit and sells it ready-to-eat and makes its own small-batch honey and canned fruit preserved. Hours vary based on availability (for example, they may open from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday only one week), so check their Facebook page before heading out. Bring your own container.

Kelowna's Top Summer Festivals You Can't Miss

Tucked between rolling vineyards and the sparkling waters of Okanagan Lake, Kelowna is a summer paradise, and when the warm weather hits, the city comes alive with seasonal festivals of all kinds. From wine tastings and multi-day rock concerts to cultural celebrations and family-friendly street parties, there’s something going on almost every weekend. The warm (but not scorching) days, plenty of sunshine, and comfortable evenings are perfect for live music, food trucks, and open-air performances.

Staying at The Royal Kelowna puts you right in the heart of it all, located downtown just steps from the waterfront. Our all-suite resort is an ideal home base for soaking up the season, complete with spacious balconies, gourmet kitchens, and a rooftop terrace with an infinity pool and unbeatable lake views. Whether you're visiting for the wine, the lake, the lively downtown vibe, or the abundance of festivals, there’s no better time to experience the city. Here are nine top summer festivals you won’t want to miss.

Okanagan Spring Wine Festival

May 2-10, 2025

Wine is central to the entire Okanagan Valley, so it should come as no surprise that one of the top events in Kelowna is a wine festival. Kick off summer with a toast to the region’s best wineries during this multi-day celebration of all things wine (and food—the best pairing!). Enjoy tasting events, vineyard dinners, and sommelier-led experiences throughout the valley. One highlight every year is the TASTE Spring Series, a wine 'trail' that allows participants to experience and sample several local wineries. May marks the festival's spring iteration, but there's also a fall event in October.

Kelowna Pride Week

May 26-June 1, 2025

One of the most vibrant and welcoming celebrations in the Okanagan, Kelowna Pride Week offers a full schedule of events celebrating diversity and inclusion. Expect colourful parades, lively dance parties, drag shows, concerts, and community gatherings throughout downtown. The Pride March is a highlight, as is the Trans March and Social (2025 dates TBD), drawing crowds to Waterfront Park for a celebration of love, equality, and connection.

National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21, 2025

Held each year on the summer solstice, this special day honours the history, heritage, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada (formerly known as National Aboriginal Day). Celebrations are hosted in City Park, a hub for Kelowna activities, and include traditional drumming and dance performances, a mini pow-wow, artisan vendors, and educational exhibits. Other special events are held in partnership with the Okanagan Heritage Museum and Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society’s Turtle Island Festival.

Rock the Lake

July 11-13, 2025

Rock fans, this one’s for you. Held outside Prospera Place (one of the main Kelowna attractions across the street from The Royal Kelowna), Rock the Lake brings big-name Canadian rock acts to downtown for three days of music. 2025 highlights on the lineup include Simple Plan, Sam Roberts Band, and The Sheepdogs. The outdoor venue makes it easy to grab a cold drink, kick back with friends, and enjoy the summer soundscape. And when you want to take a break from the sunshine and cool off, head inside to grab a snack from the concession stands. Attendees can bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

Canada Day

July 1, 2025

Downtown Kelowna throws one of the largest Canada Day celebrations in the entire region, complete with a full day of live music, multicultural food vendors at the Taste of Canada Food Fair, an artisan market at the Made in Canada Marketplace, and interactive kids’ zones. In fact, you'll find it's one of the top things to do around Kelowna among locals (and in-the-know visitors). The day ends with a big fireworks display over Okanagan Lake—easily visible from the rooftop terrace and pool at The Royal.

Downtown Kelowna Block Party

Late July 2025 (2024 date was July 20)

This free, all-ages street festival takes over Bernard Avenue for a day chock-full of local vendors, food trucks, live entertainment, children's programs, and interactive games. It's a chance to explore downtown’s shops and restaurants in a festive, pedestrian-only setting—and it's a wonderful opportunity to meet other people in the community.

Parks Alive!

July and August, 2025

Parks Alive! brings more than 50 free, all-ages concerts and cultural events to parks and public spaces across the city all summer long. Ask any local, and they'll tell you attending one of these free shows is top among things to do around Kelowna. Each performance features local and touring musicians, and the rotating locations—many near downtown—make it easy to drop in for a relaxing evening outdoors. Bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket and enjoy the casual, come-as-you-are vibe.

Meet Me on Bernard

May 16-August 29, 2025

Each summer, Bernard Avenue closes to vehicle traffic completely, transforming into a pedestrian-friendly promenade with extended patios, pop-up shops, art installations, live entertainment, and demonstrations and classes. Although it's not the most traditional of seasonal festivals since it doesn't have just one set date, whether you're grabbing brunch, catching a performance, or just strolling with a coffee, Meet Me on Bernard makes downtown feel like one big, walkable festival. The city recommends utilising public transportation or biking to Bernard Avenue.

Your Festival Home Base Awaits

There’s no shortage of summer fun in Kelowna—and with its prime downtown location, The Royal Kelowna makes it easy to participate in every event. After a full day of wine tastings, live music, or lakeside celebrations (or all of the above! C'est la vie!), you’ll love coming back to your spacious suite, complete with a private balcony, gourmet kitchen, and cozy living space. Cap off your nights with a sunset swim and panoramic views of Okanagan Lake on the rooftop terrace, complete with infinity pool and BBQ grills. With many Kelowna attractions within easy walking or biking distance and all the comforts of home, The Royal Kelowna is your perfect basecamp for seasonal festivals this summer.

A Day with Kangaroos? Yes, It's a Thing in Kelowna!

Kelowna is best known for its award-winning wineries, sun-soaked Okanagan Lake beaches, stunning mountain views, and four-season outdoor recreation. With over 40 wineries within a short drive of one another, it’s the birthplace of British Columbia’s wine scene and a veritable dream destination for wine lovers and foodies.

But did you know that you can also spend the day hanging out with kangaroos and other friendly animals?

Just a short, scenic 25-minute drive from The Royal Kelowna resort, Kangaroo Creek Farm offers visitors a unique, wholly unexpected experience you won’t find anywhere else in the region.

Here, you don't merely observe the animals the way you would in a zoo. Instead, you have the opportunity to feed them treats and pet them, sometimes even holding a baby Joey. Whether you’re an animal lover visiting Kelowna or a local looking for some different, new things to do around Kelowna with kids, Kangaroo Creek is a must-visit spot for all ages.

More Than Kangaroos

Sure, the kangaroos and wallabies are the stars of the show, but they aren’t the only animals you’ll meet at Kangaroo Creek Farm. The farm is home to a variety of friendly critters, including a pot-bellied pig, rabbits, goats, peacocks, emus, capybara, turkeys, a tortoise, parrots, and even a porcupine. Some of the more unique residents are the sugar gliders—tiny, nocturnal marsupials that the staff will let you pet under supervision. There are plenty of opportunities for up-close interactions, and many animals are happy to be fed and petted. See one of the guides wandering around the farm to grab treats for the animals, a completely free perk for guests. During high season, when temperatures are warm enough, the farm opens the reptile house, and you may get to interact with snakes or tarantulas.

The farm also has several fun photo ops, from wooden kangaroo sculptures to old-school photo booths and vintage fire trucks and wagons. You'll notice that many of these serve as shade structures and jungle gyms for the animals, too!

There's a small gift shop and in the high season, a food truck and drink cooler onsite. If you prefer a more substantial meal, you’ll find plenty of fantastic restaurants in Kelowna

When to Visit Kangaroo Creek Farm

Timing is everything here, as Kangaroo Creek Farm is only open seasonally, from mid-March through mid-October, with limited weekend and holiday-only hours starting in September. The hours do not vary while the farm is open, regardless of the season: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm daily to ensure the animals have plenty of downtime and don't get overwhelmed by human socialization. We recommend arriving right after they open in the morning, as animals tend to be less active as the heat of the day sets in. This also gives you plenty of time the rest of the day to enjoy other things to do around Kelowna with kids.

Admission and What to Expect

Kangaroo Creek Farm charges low season rates and high season rates, ranging from $10-20 in the low season and $15-30 in the high season. Children aged four and younger always get in free, making this one of the best Kelowna attractions for families with young kids. Purchase tickets online ahead of time for convenience or simply show up as walk-ins. Notably, wheelchair users also enjoy free admission, along with an adult caretaker, if applicable. Note that walk-ins are closed each day at 2:45 pm. The farm is designed as a self-guided experience, and you can spend as much or as little time as you like wandering the grounds. Most visitors spend roughly two hours here, which includes plenty of time interacting with the animals, taking photos, and browsing the gift shop.

The farm's paths are gravel, but mostly smooth and stroller- and wheel-chair friendly, so it's easy to navigate with little ones or anyone with mobility concerns. It's the perfect multi-generational outing! You'll also find restrooms and shaded picnic tables where you can take a break. Don't be surprised to see a birthday party or other celebration—Kangaroo Creek Farm doesn't charge any extra for parties!

Make it a Day Trip

Since you can easily explore Kangaroo Creek Farm in just a couple of hours, it pairs well with other Kelowna activities. After visiting the farm, check out one of the dozens of nearby wineries, soak up the sun or simply stroll along the beach, get out on Okanagan Lake with a kayak rental or sailing charter, hit the trail with a hike, or explore charming downtown Kelowna.

Explore the Unexpected Side of Kelowna

After spending time with energetic kangaroos and exploring the area, there’s no better place to relax than The Royal Kelowna. Located downtown right on Okanagan Lake, The Royal offers spacious all-suite accommodations that make it easy to settle in and unwind. Enjoy the rooftop terrace with its infinity pool, hot tubs, fire pits, and BBQ grills, or take advantage of the fitness centre with steam showers. You can even indulge in in-room spa services including massage and facials. And if you’re feeling lucky, Playtime Casino is just steps away.

Our Stay® | Well amenities program makes it even easier to relax and enjoy Kelowna. Complimentary bicycle and beach gear rentals let you take full advantage of the lake—which, by the way, The Royal Kelowna has direct access to! Exclusive discounts with local businesses add even more perks to your stay.

So, if you thought Kelowna was all about wine and beaches, think again. A day with kangaroos is most definitely a thing in Kelowna, but it’s just one of the many unforgettable experiences waiting for you. Check out our current promotions and packages, and book your stay at The Royal today. We can't wait to host you—and hear all about your experience with the animals!

6 Awesome Hike Spots in Kelowna You Should Check Out

Whether you're in Kelowna to sample vino from one of the more than 40 wineries, let your hair down on a girls' weekend, to see why they call it a "golfers' paradise," or something else altogether, there's a decent chance you have hiking somewhere on your itinerary. Spending time in The Great Outdoors is a four-season activity here, and hiking is number one on many lists of top Kelowna activities. You'll find dozens of hikes right in town, but if you're up for a quick drive, there are even more fantastic options that work well as a day trip nearby, within an hour or so.

Knox Mountain Park

You don't even have to leave town to find one of the best hike spots in Kelowna—Knox Mountain Park is just north of downtown! Towering about 300 meters (984 feet) above Okanagan Lake, Knox Mountain is understandably one of the top Kelowna attractions, home to several popular hikes. Two of the best options for any level include the Apex Trail and Paul's Tomb

  • Apex Trail: Moderate with a steep but manageable incline leading to a lookout at the top of the mountain. From there, enjoy stunning views of the lake and downtown Kelowna.

  • Paul's Tomb: A much more leisurely hike with little incline leading down to a secluded beach.

Be aware that both trails are popular with mountain bikers, as well. Keep your eyes and ears open, and share the trail (hikers should always yield to cyclists).

Mount Boucherie

Over in West Kelowna, the area's most prominent landmark beckons hikers to its summit. Like Knox Mountain, there are a few options for getting to the top of 758-meter (2,487-foot) Mount Boucherie, which is actually an extinct volcano. The most popular is by far the Boucherie Rush Trail, a steep but rewarding climb with several switchbacks and a breathtaking panoramic view at the end.

Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park

Perhaps best known as a rock climbing destination to get to "The Crags," this regional park in south Kelowna was once called Cedar Mountain Park. A network of easy to moderate trails traverses 400-plus hectares of open space, with some of them connecting to the nearby Lebanon Creek Greenway Regional Park. Most of the trails connect at some point, so you can start anywhere you like. You'll find restrooms near the junction of the Elk and Cedar trails.

Notably, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has designated the park a Nocturnal Preserve, noting its clear, dark skies with minimal artificial light. If you're into stargazing, pack a headlamp or flashlights and some extra layers, and plan a night hike so you can observe the exceptional night sky!

Kettle Valley Rail Trail

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is an extremely popular biking destination, but it makes our list of top hiking places as well. It's actually a decommissioned former railway and it's still maintained, so it makes an ideal trail for exploring both on foot and on two wheels—nice and flat, with incredible scenery! While the entire trail is quite long, you can tackle different sections and go only as far as you'd like before turning back. Click here to learn more about the rail trail's sections.

If you're visiting Kelowna in the fall, the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is one of the best places to leaf-peep. Specifically, it's one of the best areas to spot golden larches starting in mid- to late September.

Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park

Technically, Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park is part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. However, because of its uniqueness and popularity, it stands on its own as one of the best hike spots in Kelowna (you'll hear it come up as one of the top things to do around Kelowna in conversation!). With steel bridges, tunnels, and a whopping 18 iconic trestles, you can't miss hiking here. There are many, many trails to choose from, but we recommend one of these shorter ones that offers a tremendous punch in terms of scenery.

Goat's Peak

Located inside one of Kelowna's newest regional parks (officially opened in late 2019), this moderately challenging hike checks every box: it starts off nice and easy alongside the water, then climbs quite a bit up the mountain, and offers stunning views the entire way, including fall foliage and summer wildflowers. You want the six-kilometer (3.6 miles) Goat's Peak Trail, which AllTrails labels as hard because of the incline, but we promise is manageable for even casual hikers. Find the trail just outside of West Kelowna as you're headed toward Peachland.

As you can see, Kelowna’s hiking trails offer something for every hiker, whether you’re chasing in-your-face panoramic views or you want a more secluded forest walk. After a day on the trails in the Okanagan, there’s no better place to relax than The Royal Kelowna, conveniently located in the heart of the city and close to many of these fantastic hikes. Book your stay today and make The Royal your basecamp for exploring BC's natural beauty, all while enjoying luxury accommodations, top-tier amenities, and stunning lake views.

5. Downtown Kelowna Winter Street Market & Light Up

11:00 am - 5:00 pm (tree lighting at 5:30 pm), November 30, 2024, Stuart Park

Easily one of the most iconic Kelowna attractions during the holidays is the huge tree downtown. Come to the annual Light Up event to see it illuminate for the season, and do some shopping downtown beforehand while you enjoy complimentary hot cocoa and live entertainment.

6. “A Rocky Mountain High Christmas” Performance

10. The Nutcracker

December 13-15, 2024, Kelowna Community Theatre

11. Big White Ski Resort Christmas Eve Festival

December 24, 2024, Big White Ski Resort

The Christmas Eve Festival has been a long-time local favourite for Kelowna activities during the holidays. This annual event features food booths and craft stations, carnival-style games, live music, bonfire stations, a Loose Moose dance party and everyone's favourite: Christmas Eve fireworks. There's also a warm indoor area inside the Village Centre Mall, in case the chill gets to be a bit too much.

If you ski, head back up the mountain on Christmas morning for Ski With Santa...which is exactly what it sounds like, and just as fun! Join the big guy in red to ski down Sun Run (one of the resort's 'green,' or easy runs), then enjoy a hot cocoa bar with dozens of festive toppings in Santa's Workshop at the bottom.

12. New York New Years

December 31, 2024, Stuart Park and Kelowna Community Theatre

This FREE annual New Year's Eve celebration is one of the top things to do during Christmas season in Kelowna, especially for families. The all-ages celebration includes upbeat live music and other entertainment, kids' activity and game stations in the Snow Zone, free hot cocoa, face-painting, food trucks, and more. Stay until 9:00, when there will be a fireworks show and countdown to 'midnight' (early so parents can get home and get the littlest ones tucked in!).

This event is primarily held outdoors at Stuart Park, but you can also enjoy some indoor, warm festivities at the Valley First Warm-up Zone inside the Kelowna Community Theatre.

The Ultimate Foodie's Guide to Kelowna: 12 Must-Try Restaurants and Hidden Gems

Kelowna may be best known for its abundance of wineries and vineyards and, of course, its location on the shores of sparkling Okanagan Lake, but its foodie scene is worth a visit in its own right.

With a strong focus on locally and sustainably sourced ingredients, as well as what's fresh and in season, you can't go wrong with any restaurants in Kelowna. Best of all, The Royal Kelowna is located within easy walking distance of many of them, allowing you to get a very literal taste of the city.

The Galley Lakeside Cafe

5-minute walk/2-minute drive

For a quick pick-me-up right along the waterfront, The Galley is one of the best restaurants in Kelowna. It's a fast-casual spot where you order at the walk-up counter and then find a seat on the dog-friendly, heated outdoor patio. Not only is it heated year-round, but there are also cozy fire pits for the chillier months.

Beyond coffee staples, the cafe offers a pleasantly surprising number of gluten-free and vegan choices, plus its legendary rotating gelato flavours.

Bouchon's Bistro

6-minute walk/2-minute drive

If you're the type of foodie who sees food as an experience, head to Bouchon's. The authentic French bistro in the heart of the city's Cultural District delivers in every aspect: excellent environs with superb service, traditional French cuisine, and a location that somehow feels hidden away yet is within walking distance of many top Kelowna attractions. If you can't decide on something, go for the chef's tasting menu, which changes weekly.

Skinny Duke's Glorious Emporium

10-minute walk/3-minute drive

With its retro 70s vibe and one-of-a-kind Italian-Asian fusion menu, Skinny Duke's is one of the restaurants in Kelowna you simply have to experience for yourself. The interior is filled with mismatched vintage sofas, old-school TVs, and plenty of cozy nooks to hang out. Settle in, order some dim sum and pizza, and grab a deck of cards for some friendly competition.

Salt & Brick

11-minute walk/3-minute drive

One of the most unique things to do around Kelowna, at least from a foodie perspective, is dine at Salt & Brick. The menu changes every day, making the experience extra special, even for locals. Keep an eye on the restaurant's social channels, as it frequently hosts live music, special winemaker dinners, and other special events.

Sunny's A Modern Diner

11-minute walk/3-minute drive

We're not the only ones who think Sunny's is one of the best restaurants in Kelowna—Food Network Canada's Big Food Bucket List TV show visited in 2021. Host and expert foodie John Catucci tried two dishes, Chicks on a Raft and Chicken Meets Waffle. Chicks on a Raft is especially memorable, combining peanut butter and savory ingredients, but the whole menu is equally fresh. The patio is also dog-friendly.

Antico Pizza Napoletana

11-minute walk/3-minute drive

Just a few doors down from Sunny's, locals will almost universally tell you that this is the best pizza spot in Kelowna. The thin crust, Naples-style pizza, plus a selection of authentic Italian pastas and desserts, are truly to die for. Even the house Caesar salad has a stellar reputation, and one local reviewer recently said he would "swim across the lake for an order."

OEB Breakfast Co.

14-minute walk/4-minute drive

On the southern edge of downtown and just a couple of blocks from Kelowna City Park, OEB is a brunch staple. The colourful interior is cheery and bright, but the food is the star here. OEB is best known for its variety of out-of-the-box egg "bennys," served on all-butter croissants and with unexpected toppings (Moroccan Waterfowl and Korean Bulgogi, for example). The banana cream pie French toast is also worth a look—and the calories.

Bohemian Cafe

14-minute walk/4-minute drive

Known affectionately as "The Boh" (pronounced like "Bow"), this cafe is a staple among restaurants in Kelowna. It's been around for over 30 years! Almost everything is locally sourced, and you'll find everything from breads to jams and meats are homemade. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but any dish featuring Oma & Opa's original breakfast sausage is a winner. It's scratch-made and the recipe hasn't changed in decades (it's that good!).

Just Peachy

14-minute walk/4-minute drive

The overall experience at Just Peachy is like an instant mood booster. The colourful, Instagrammable interior perfectly matches the bright acai bowls and smoothie bowls, featuring many ingredients sourced locally. It's the perfect light breakfast or snack to fuel all your fun Kelowna activities.

Okanagan Street Food

21-minute walk/4-minute drive

As the restaurant itself puts it, this is "simply elevated comfort food." But while it may be simple, it's executed expertly, with every dish loaded with layers of complex flavour. The menu changes constantly, and you can choose between dining in or getting take-and-bake. Extra perks really do elevate this casual experience, including a dog-friendly patio and the city's biggest hot sauce bar.

Frankie We Salute You!

8-minute drive

Even devoted carnivores adore this vegetarian restaurant (really!). Alongside menu staples like salads and soups, you'll find plenty of creative and unexpected options—think carrot cake waffles and Baja celery root tacos. In addition to the food items, Frankie serves a nicely curated selection of local wine, beer, and seasonal cocktails. The restaurant even makes its own vegan version of Bailey's! Don't miss the daily happy hour from 3-5:00 pm, when you can score an appetizer and classic Aperol Spritz at a steep discount.

Home Block at CedarCreek Estate Winery

22-minute drive

For its winning combination of incredible views, chic ambiance, and impeccable service, Home Block is one of the best restaurants in Kelowna. Both the restaurant and adjacent tasting room overlook the lake and have outdoor patio seating, and you can choose from an array of "wine-forward" prix fixe 3-5-course dinners or a 2-course paired lunch. On the winery side, you can enjoy several tasting experiences and nosh on sharing plates.

Scuba Diving in the Fall: Everything You Need to Know About Diving Into Okanagan Lake

While many people may not immediately associate Okanagan Lake with scuba diving (it's best known for its 40-plus world-class wineries and beaches, after all), the stunning freshwater lake in British Columbia is fantastic for cold-water dives. Spanning 135 kilometres (84 miles) in length and plunging to depths of about 232 meters (761 feet), Okanagan Lake is an impressive hidden gem—especially in the fall, when visibility is generally high and much of the summer boat traffic is long gone.

Whether you’re an experienced diver or a beginner eager to log your first dive, this guide covers everything you need to know about diving in Okanagan Lake.

Best Time to Dive

Okanagan Lake is diveable year-round, but fall is arguably among the best times to take the plunge. Water temperatures typically hover around 16-18°C in early fall, cool but still comfortable with a wetsuit. As October rolls in, temperatures dip, but again, even late fall scuba diving can be incredible with the right gear.

There are two other major advantages of diving in autumn: increased visibility of about 4.5-9 meters (15-30 feet) and reduced boat traffic (the former undoubtedly a result of the latter!).

What You Can Expect to See

Okanagan Lake's underwater world is full of surprises and loads of unique local history. Expect to find sunken artifacts ranging from boats to cars and an enormous railroad barge, sea caves, interesting rock formations including ledges and cliffs with sheer drop-offs, artificial reefs, and, of course, a tremendous range of marine life. Trout, Kokanee salmon, and huge invasive carp are common sightings, but you may even spot Ogopogo, the local 'lake monster.'

Top 10 Okanagan Lake Dive Sites

Divers are spoiled for choice on Okanagan Lake, with both shore and boat dives, and options for every experience level. Check with one of Kelowna's dive shops, Diving Dynamics, Double Arrow, and Innerspace Watersports, to inquire about certification courses, gear rental, or guided dives.

1. Paul's Tomb (Beginner)

Although you can technically hike to this dive site located in Knox Mountain Park, home to popular Kelowna activities, including mountain biking and hiking, it makes far more sense to boat to it. Who wants to tote heavy scuba gear on a hike?! Look for two small boats, as well as a statue of Ogopogo.

2. Caesars Landing (Beginner)

Caesars Landing is widely considered one of the best beginner dives in the Kelowna area, featuring a rock wall and an easy-to-reach antique sunken automobile.

3. Bertram Creek Park (Beginner)

This easy-access shore dive is known for its rock wall and gradual sloping entry, perfect for beginners or those wanting a relaxed dive to acclimate to cold water.

4. Fintry Barge (Beginner)

Resting at a depth of somewhere between 25-60 feet (7-15 meters), the Fintry Barge is an exciting shore dive. The barge is encrusted with colourful, interesting marine life and hosts other artifacts to explore, including a small boat.

Important: Fintry Provincial Park is only open seasonally, from April 1 through mid-October.

5. 'The Bridge,' AKA William R. Bennett Bridge (Advanced)

Although it's very easy to access this dive site from the water on either side of the bridge, divers should use extreme caution here. Not only is boating traffic wide open here, but there's a ton of debris in the water from the bridge's rebuild, and the bridge traffic above ground creates a lot of noise and vibration underwater.

6. The Milk Truck/Wilson's Landing (Advanced)

One of the most interesting dives in the lake and arguably one of the more famous Kelowna attractions among the diving community, the submerged milk truck at Wilson’s Landing offers an unusual experience. Even the wall down to the truck is interesting, teeming with marine life and artifacts. The truck is sunk at around 31 meters deep (100 feet), so only truly advanced divers should attempt to reach it.

7. Scruggins Reef (Advanced)

A local favourite dive site both for its high visibility and unique feature, Scruggins Reef is home to a 'propeller gravesite.' In this particularly rocky area, almost like an underwater boulder field, you'll spot countless boat props that didn't fare so well against the rocks.

8. Rattlesnake Island (Advanced)

On the lake's eastern shore across from Peachland, one of the best day trips from Kelowna, Rattlesnake Island, is accessible via boat only. The island's underwater terrain is intriguing, featuring caves and sharp drop-offs. Due to the caves, it should come as no surprise that many reported Ogopogo sightings originate here.

9. Squally Point (Advanced)

Located just south of Rattlesnake Island, Squally Point is another boat-accessible dive site best known for its extensive cave system. Only experienced cave divers should actually enter the cave, but there's plenty to explore outside its mouth, too.

10. Commando Bay (Intermediate to Advanced)

This boat-in dive site is rich in history, once used for training during World War II. Today, it’s an excellent spot for intermediate divers, offering a unique opportunity to explore military relics from the area's past.

7 Must Try Day Trips from Kelowna - Okanagan Valley & Beyond

Kelowna is more than just a great wine city—it's also the perfect gateway to some of the Okanagan Valley's most memorable day trips. There's certainly no shortage of fun, unique options for what to do in Kelowna any time of year, but it just so happens there are also dozens of nearby destinations within a short drive (or bike ride!). Nestled in the heart of downtown and the shores of Okanagan Lake, The Royal Kelowna serves as an ideal jumping-off point for exploring many of them. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, history buff, a family with little ones, or a couple seeking a romantic getaway, here are seven of the best day trips from Kelowna.

Okanagan Rail Trail

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com

Distance from Kelowna: The start (or end) of the trail is right in downtown Kelowna

This 50-kilometer multi-use trail runs between Kelowna and Vernon, following the old railway line. It's consistently one of the most popular Kelowna attractions, showing off everything there is to love about the Okanagan Valley whether you walk, run, or cycle. Enjoy up-close views of vineyards, lakes, and mountains, regardless of which section you tackle. Plus, you can easily detour to grab a glass of wine or coffee along the way!

Insider tip: The Royal Kelowna guests can rent complimentary bicycles, part of our Stay® | Well amenities, and pick the trail up just a few blocks from the resort.

Myra Canyon Trestles

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com

Distance from Kelowna: 24 km / 30 minutes

Year-round, one of the most popular Kelowna attractions is the Myra Canyon Trestles. Famous for its 18 historic trestle bridges and two tunnels, the trestles are part of the Kettle Valley Railway and today, have become a go-to destination for biking or taking a leisurely hike.

From May through October, Myra Canyon Bicycle Rentals and Tours offers guided tours, or you can take a shuttle from downtown Kelowna. The trestles are open in the winter, too, but you'll need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance (and some snowshoes!).

Peachland

Distance from Kelowna: 25 km / 30 minutes

As its name suggests, the charming lakeside town of Peachland is celebrated for its sweet fruit wines and picture-perfect orchards. It's also one of the best day trips from Kelowna for families, home to Swim Bay, a top Okanagan Lake beach for little ones. You'll find ZipZone in Peachland, the highest ziplines in Canada, as well as several companies offering thrilling ATV tours. If you prefer something a little more laid-back, take the easy 2-kilometer 'hike' to beautiful Hardy Falls. In the fall, keep an eye out for spawning salmon.

Fintry Provincial Park

Distance from Kelowna: 38 km / 36 minutes

Located on the western shore of Okanagan Lake, Fintry Provincial Park is a gem with lots to explore. The park offers a mix of natural beauty and historical sites, as it was once a hub for trappers and traders along the Hudson's Bay Company route. Wander the grounds of the Fintry Estate, including the Manor House, packing house, and century-old barns, to get a glimpse into the region's past. Better yet, take a self-guided tour (available Wednesday through Sunday).

The park also features a sandy beach with designated areas for swimming, fishing, and paddling, as well as a stunning waterfall and popular hike to reach it. Technically, there are three waterfalls in the gorge, but only one is accessible. With multiple tiers, Fintry Falls is quite dramatic, and the wooden staircase 'trail' with over 400 steps makes it even more so! The trail and falls alone attract many people on day trips from Kelowna.

Davison Orchards Country Village - Vernon

Distance from Kelowna: 56 km / 50 minutes

Head north to Vernon and spend a day at Davison Orchards Country Village, a delightful, wholesome destination for all ages. This family-owned farm (since 1933, by the way!) offers guided orchard tours on an old-fashioned train, a petting zoo, a huge one-acre children's play area, plus tons of fresh, locally grown produce, fresh-pressed 100% apple cider, made-from-scratch real fruit ice cream, and baked goodies like pies and muffins.

The orchards make one of the best day trips from Kelowna in just about any season, with u-pick pumpkins and apples in the fall, orchard blossoms in the spring, and the bountiful harvest season come summer.

Oliver and Baldy Mountain Resort

Distance from Kelowna: 102 km / 1.5 hours

Yes, Kelowna is a highly-regarded wine region, where winemaking started in British Columbia. But Oliver is actually "Canada's wine capital," making it one of the most worthwhile day trips from Kelowna. In addition to the 40-plus wineries, renowned for bold red varietals like syrah, a trip to Baldy Mountain Resort is a must.

Baldy is a popular winter destination for skiing and snowboarding with fewer crowds than larger BC resorts. During the summer, the paths crisscrossing the mountain transform to hiking and mountain biking trails, and many people enjoy scenic lift rides, disc golf, and volleyball.

Osoyoos

Distance from Kelowna: 124 km / 1 hour 50 minutes

Just a bit further south from Oliver, Osoyoos is home to Canada's only desert. Seeing that unique landscape and climate alone is worth making Osoyoos one of your day trips from Kelowna! Stop by Nk’Mip Cellars (pronounced Inka-meep), the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America, to get a literal taste of both exceptional wines and local heritage.

TheNk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre is also worth a visit for its fascinating exhibits and guided tours. Take advantage of the unusually warm waters of Osoyoos Lake with a beach day, paddleboarding, or swimming, or get a birds'-eye view of this unique fertile desert region by heading up to Anarchist Mountain Lookout.

Before heading out, remember to take advantage of our Stay® | Well amenities. Grab a bike, some beach gear, umbrellas, or snowshoes to make your day trips from Kelowna even more enjoyable. Check out our current promotions and book your stay at The Royal Kelowna today!

Immerse Yourself in Kelowna's Rich Arts & Culture Scene: Everything You Need to Know

While Kelowna is very well known for its dozens of world-class wineries, its thriving arts and cultural heritage is equally captivating. In fact, there's quite a bit of overlap—the city's six-block Cultural District occupies the one-time fruit packing hub, perfectly blending history and modern-day. As you walk around the district visiting galleries and museums, you'll come across contemporary public art installations on display outside historical buildings.

Whatever brings you to the Okanagan Valley, consider adding one or two highlights from Kelowna's arts scene to your itinerary.

And if you want to stay close enough to the Cultural District that you don't even need a vehicle to explore, look no further than The Royal Kelowna. Nestled right between the bustling district and gorgeous Okanagan Lake, the all-suite resort is your gateway to not only an enriching arts and culture experience but also many of the hottest Kelowna attractions.

A Vibrant Hub of Arts & Culture

Kelowna's arts scene appeals to a wide range of interests, offering everything from live performances and visual arts to museums and galleries. In this guide, you'll learn about several must-see Kelowna activities, and venues focused on arts, culture & heritage, most within easy walking distance of The Royal.

Prospera Place

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com - Matt Ferguson Photography

Just across the street from The Royal Kelowna, Prospera Place is a large multi-purpose arena (the largest in Kelowna, actually!) that hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Home to the Kelowna Rockets hockey team, it also serves as a venue for everything from concerts to comedy shows, bull riding events, and outdoor summer music festivals. Notably, every summer, Prospera Place hosts one of the Okanagan's most highly anticipated music festivals, Rock the Lake

Kelowna Community Theatre

The Kelowna Community Theatre offers a diverse range of live performance arts. From improv comedy shows and musicals the whole family will enjoy to TED Talk-style niche business presentations and opera, this theatre truly has something for everyone. And as a smaller venue, there's really no 'bad' seat in the house. Three bars and concessions stand throughout the theatre serve patrons, and locals note that the theatre staff is well-organised and attentive.

Located just behind the community theatre, the smaller, boutique Black Box Theatre shows special film screenings, such as limited runs, independent films, and vintage movies.

Rotary Centre for the Arts

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com

Another lively hub for performance and visual arts, the Rotary Centre for the Arts hosts a vast variety of art programs and live performances. Really, saying that is just the tip of the creative iceberg!

The Rotary Centre has several studios for artists-in-residence, dance, and pottery; hosts documentary screenings and concerts; brings in local comedians for open mic and stand-up comedy nights; holds community drum circles; and so much more. One especially notable thing about the centre is that it offers numerous art and music programs for adults and children alike. These include summer art camps, jazz camps, and specialised classes throughout the year.

Kelowna Art Gallery

Near the Rotary Centre, the Kelowna Art Gallery showcases rotating exhibits of both historical and contemporary artwork, with a strong emphasis on Canadian artists. Many locals consider the gallery to be the beating heart of Kelowna's arts scene, with not just rotating exhibits but many other immersive educational programs. Much like the Rotary Centre, you can visit the Kelowna Art Gallery a dozen times and never have the same experience twice. Simply wander around and admire the current exhibits, enroll your child in an art camp, drop by to witness an Indigenous Beading Circle, or sign up for a class to hone your drawing or painting skills.

The art gallery also offers a few programs that are especially popular: on Family Sundays, all ages are welcome to come in and create a special take-home project based on either the season or current exhibits. The ART LAB provides a completely free studio setting where anyone can create with an array of supplied materials, and Studio Scribble offers activities specifically for kids aged five and under.

Okanagan Heritage Museum

The Okanagan Valley has a fascinating history, in terms of both its geology and how it was settled. At the Okanagan Heritage Museum, visitors get a up-close and personal look at its entire history, up to present day. Admission is by donation, making it accessible and informative for all visitors—not to mention one of the best Kelowna activities for families.

Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum

Courtesy of tourismkelowna.com - Colin Jewall Photo Studios Inc.

Housed in the historic Laurel Packinghouse, the oldest fruit packing house in British Columbia, the Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum celebrates the area's rich (and tasty!) agricultural history. During your visit, you'll see authentic vintage machinery, colourful barrels, bottles, and fruit crates, and when in season (outside of the wintertime), a live beehive with thousands of bees busy at work. Visitors can drop into the museum Thursdays through Saturdays or book a guided tour in advance to learn more about the local wine and orchard industries.

Hambleton Galleries

Established in 1963, Hambleton Galleries is a fine art gallery that features both contemporary and historic Canadian artists. With such a long-running presence in the community, Hambleton is a tremendous part of Kelowna's arts, culture & heritage. You can always stop by to admire the ongoing exhibits, and make sure to visit during the quarterly seasonal shows.

Okanagan Military Museum

For a very, very different perspective on the area, a visit to the Okanagan Military Museum is a must. It highlights the contributions of Okanagan Valley locals to the armed forces, as well as important wars throughout history. The museum also boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of firearms in all of Canada, well worth seeing in its own right. Also onsite is the Vince Bezeau Military Library and Archives, a popular resource for genealogy research. Like other Kelowna museums, admission is by donation.

In Kelowna, every corner is an invitation to explore and celebrate the arts. Whether you're an avid art lover, a history buff, or simply someone looking for a memorable cultural experience, Kelowna's vibrant arts scene offers something for everyone. So, pack your curiosity and creativity and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Kelowna's arts and culture. Trust us, it's a journey you'll never forget!

Kelowna Wineries (and Wine Trails!) You Have To Visit!

As the birthplace of wine in British Columbia, Kelowna has no shortage of wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms. In fact, there are over 40 vineyards here, many of them within a short drive of one another! The tricky thing is deciding which ones to visit, especially if you're only in town for a short stay.

Whether you want to take your time at one or two spots, go on a guided tour with your girlfriends to hit several in a short time, or thoroughly explore an entire wine trail, we have you covered with this detailed guide on wineries in Kelowna.

10 Best Kelowna Wineries

Quick note: the pricing information we included is current as of June 2024.

1. Sandhill Wines

The closest winery to The Royal Kelowna resort, this popular, award-winning winery is in the heart of downtown. Sandhill was the first winery in the Okanagan Valley to test the innovative concept of single vineyard winemaking, and still offers these special wines through its Small Lots Program.

Pricing: Tastings start at $16, and you can also order wines by the glass in the tasting room

Distance from The Royal: Two-minute drive/15-minute walk

2. Calona Vineyards

Adjacent to Sandhill, Calona is another of the best Kelowna wineries downtown. It's also one of the oldest wineries in British Columbia, focused heavily on wine education. The winery offers popular wine courses in addition to tours and tastings. One especially unique thing about Calona is the beautiful wine labels. Paintings grace each bottle, chosen because they touch on specific aspects of the wine's flavour.

Pricing: Wines available by the glass, bottle, or flight and priced accordingly

Distance from The Royal: Two-minute drive/16-minute walk

3. Sperling

When you ask around about wineries in Kelowna, you'll almost certainly hear Sperling recommended. The certified organic vineyard is one of the oldest in BC, and it's been family-run for four generations. With that in mind, it's family-friendly, encouraging visitors to bring a picnic and with a playground onsite.

Pricing: $10–25 per person with a choice of five flights

Distance from The Royal: 13-minute drive/25-minute bike ride

4. Tantalus Vineyards

Many people, local and visitors alike, count Tantalus among the very best Kelowna wineries. Its Riesling garners international attention, but the Chardonnay, bubbly, and Pinot Noirs are all divine, too. Aside from the wine itself, Tantalus' physical space is a work of art. The LEED-certified tasting room and dog-friendly patio have outstanding views over the lake, and the interior is set up almost like a gallery, complete with works from local artists on display.

Pricing: $15–25 for a tasting of five wines, or $45 per person with the Bees & Barrels tour

Distance from The Royal: 15-minute drive/38-minute bike ride

5. The View

As its name implies, The View offers some of the most impressive scenery of any Kelowna winery—and that's really saying something! Sip your wine as you look out over the vineyards, taking in sweeping views of the mountains and lake. In homage to the winery's setting in a 1922 apple packing house, it offers a popular cider in addition to several wine varietals.

Pricing: $10 for a flight of wine or cider

Distance from The Royal: 16-minute drive/37-minute bike ride

6. The Vibrant Vine

Looking for the best of the best Kelowna wineries? Head to this aptly-named, bright yellow winery! It holds the honor of making the 2013 "Best White Wine in the World" and has repeatedly been named the top winery in BC. Visiting The Vibrant Vine is a true experience, with everything onsite in 3-D (you'll even get a pair of 3-D glasses when you arrive!), three stages for live performances, and multiple places to eat.

Pricing: Tastings start at $13.05

Distance from The Royal: 17-minute drive/45-minute bike ride

7. Priest Creek Family Estate Winery

Unlike many other wineries in Kelowna, which are known primarily for their whites, family-owned Priest Creek is renowned for its red wines. And believe it or not, many people flock here for the onsite food truck, affectionately known as The Spot, just as much as the vino.

Pricing: $10 for a tasting of five wines

Distance from The Royal: 19-minute drive

West Kelowna Wineries

With so many fantastic wineries and Kelowna attractions right downtown, you don't have to venture far. However, don't overlook West Kelowna, just a short hop across Okanagan Lake.

8. Rollingdale

Another certified organic winery, Rollingdale is known mostly for its sweet icewine and other white wines. The land where the vineyards sit today was once a rolling orchard, with apple, cherry, and peach trees. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the tasting room, wine cellar, or outside on the hill overlooking the beautiful surroundings.

Pricing: $10 per person, per tasting

Distance from The Royal: 10-minute drive/33-minute bike ride

9. Grizzli Winery

The state-of-the-art tasting room at Grizzli is one of the largest in all of Canada, so everyone is sure to find a wine they love. There's also truly "always something happening." Come for a 'regular' tasting, happy hour, live music, Yoga and Wine, or even family-friendly 'Sip n Slide' events with bouncy castles and games. Throughout the tasting room, be sure to check out the artwork, all by Canadian artists and all available for purchase.

Pricing: Tastings are $20 per person, tours are $45

Distance from The Royal: 10-minute drive/40-minute bike ride

10. Black Swift

One of five Jason Parkes Customs brands, all of them a bit edgy and innovative, Black Swift has one of the best outdoor spaces of any Kelowna winery. Of course, it overlooks the lake, but it also has a wonderful picnic area with plenty of seating and shade. The pièce de résistance, however, is that the entire building is a work of art, with black swift birds adorning several surfaces. The wines also have clever names, adding to the overall experience. Unicorn of the Sea or Fistful of Mothballs, anyone?

Pricing: $15–30 per person

Distance from The Royal: 12-minute drive/40-minute bike ride

Fall in Love with Kelowna's Luxurious Waterfront Resort

Kelowna's official motto, "the small city that offers everything," doesn't exaggerate in the slightest. The city, the largest one in the Okanagan Valley despite being 'small,' sits directly on the shores of Okanagan Lake, nestled in the heart of three mountain ranges. It also has several beaches, rivers, miles of vineyards and orchards, and seemingly endless access to the great outdoors. Sitting on the lake's eastern shore at almost the exact midway point, pretty much all Kelowna activities revolve around the waterfront in some way.

With that in mind, you'll want to stay as close to the lake as possible in order to take full advantage of all the many waterfront Kelowna activities. It doesn't get much closer than The Royal Kelowna, a luxury hotel in the center of downtown with Okanagan Lake as its backyard.

In this guide, we're going over exactly how staying at The Royal allows you to make the most of everything this beautiful lakeside city has to offer—and why you'll fall in love with it all!

Location, Location, Location

The hotel is so centrally located that you can easily get by without having your own vehicle if you prefer. And if you do drive, we have secure covered parking available.

Steps From the Beach and Other Kelowna Hot Spots

Yes, we just covered The Royal's unbeatable location. However, its proximity specifically to beaches and the Cultural District is worth highlighting. After all, these are some of the main Kelowna attractions that bring visitors to the area!

You already know that you can easily walk over to Tugboat Beach or along the Waterfront Promenade. On a bicycle (more on that down below!), you can quickly ride over to a handful of other beaches, including Hot Sand Beach and Downtown Sails Dog Beach. And with over 300 days of sunshine each year, you can actually enjoy Kelowna's beaches throughout much of the year.

Head the other direction out of The Royal, away from the waterfront, and you'll find yourself in the heart of the Cultural District. As you may expect, this six-square-block area is home to several galleries, museums, theatres, and other cultural attractions, such as public art installations. Highlights include the Okanagan Heritage Museum, Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum, and Kasugai Gardens. You can even take free guided walking tours in the summer months

It's hard to top a relaxing beach day, soaking up the sun and playing in the water. Believe it or not, Kelowna has over 30 beaches and is highly regarded as one of the best beach cities in BC!

Some of the most popular include Hot Sands and Boyce Gyro, but if you're looking for a quieter, more romantic spot (especially for sunset!), head to Sarsons or Hobson

Even on chilly days, beaches offer several fun things to do. Stroll along the lakeshore, watch resident wildlife, or channel your inner kids and build sandcastles. As part of our Stay® | Well amenities program, hotel guests can check out complimentary beach gear such as umbrellas, chairs, and wagons.

4. Take to the Water

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you may want to get ON the water during your romantic getaway in beautiful Kelowna. Luckily, there are many ways to do this, including kayaking, paddleboarding, renting or chartering a boat, or even snorkeling. There's no better way to explore one of the star Kelowna attractions! As a guest of The Royal Kelowna, you can take advantage of special discounts on paddlesport rentals and lessons at the Kelowna Yacht Club.

One of the more recent watersports to arrive at the lake is flyboarding, a perfect activity for truly adventurous couple. On a unique, high-powered flyboard propelled by a large hose coming off a jet ski, you can fly in the air and perform tricks. No prior experience is necessary!

5. Hit the Trail

Taking a hike (or a bike ride!) is one of the most fun things to do in Kelowna in any season. Popular options include the Apex Trail at Knox Mountain, with views overlooking downtown, and the Light Blue Lake Trail at Stephens Coyote Ridge Regional Park, less than 20 minutes from The Royal.

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail and expansive Okanagan Rail Trail are both extremely popular for both hiking and biking. Hotel guests can borrow complimentary bikes for a memorable outdoor adventure that combines exploring with visiting romantic places like scenic overlooks and local wineries.

6. Indulge in a Couples’ Spa Day

Bond over some relaxation during your romantic getaway by treating yourselves to a treatment at one of Kelowna's top-notch spas. From a couples' massage session to facials or body wraps, it's a wonderful way to pamper yourselves. As a bonus, it's a great activity for a rainy or cold day. You can't go wrong with any service at Orah Spa & Salon or West Kelowna Massage Therapy. For an especially unique experience, book a treatment at Room and Pillar Spa, Kelowna's first and only Himalayan salt cave.

7. Play at Big White Ski Resort

This famed ski resort, celebrated for its snow quality and diverse terrain, transforms into a playground for outdoor enthusiasts come summertime. Regardless of what type of mountain explorer you are, Big White makes the perfect setting for a romantic getaway in Kelowna. Fly down snow-covered slopes or enjoy romantic activities like sleigh rides or ice skating in the winter, then spend the summer hiking, biking, and enjoying scenic rides on the ski lift.

8. Have a Picnic Under the Stars

Kelowna has well over 100 excellent restaurants, spanning just about every imaginable cuisine type. Grab some takeout from one or two of your favourites (perhaps dinner from one and dessert from another!), along with one or two bottles of wine. Then, head to a romantic spot such as a local beach or park to enjoy an al fresco meal. Knox Mountain, the Kelowna Lookout at Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park, and Waterfront Park (walking distance from The Royal!) are all great for picnics.

8 Awesome Things to Do in Kelowna during Spring

Spring in Kelowna is a magical time. Truthfully, all four seasons are special here, but there's just something extra magical about springtime, as the weather warms up and Mother Nature re-awakens. During this bustling, colourful season, there's no shortage of exciting things to do in Kelowna. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, or outdoor adventurer, have an appreciation for culture, or you're looking for the perfect getaway for a girls' weekend, the unofficial capital city of the Okanagan Valley has something for everyone.

As an added perk, springtime is considered a shoulder season in Kelowna, sandwiched between winter holidays (ski season) and the busy summer. Not only are crowds at their lowest of the year, but you'll also find that just about everything in the valley is a bit more wallet-friendly. Accommodation, rental cars, and even tours all have low-season pricing. Speaking of tours, let's dive into some of the best Kelowna spring activities.

8 Can't-Miss Kelowna Spring Activities

1. Wine Tours

Of all the fun things to do in Kelowna, visiting wineries is arguably the most widely known. Kelowna is the official birthplace of BC winemaking, and there are well over 40 wineries in the city. For multiple reasons, spring is the perfect time to explore them. Many local wineries unveil highly anticipated seasonal releases in the spring (white varietals are the most buzzed about here), and it's one of the few times all year that you can walk in without advance reservations and enjoy a tasting or tour.

Can't decide where to start? Guests of The Royal Kelowna resort can take advantage of a 20% partner discount on wine tours with Kelowna Concierge. Experience 4–5 wineries and have all the transportation logistics handled for you, so you can quite literally sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride (and wine!).

2. Hit the Greens

For golf enthusiasts, there’s no question about what to do in Kelowna come springtime. This is the best time of year to enjoy the city’s impressive selection of 19 golf courses, each one offering diverse terrain and challenges for players of all skill levels. Staying true to its roots—very literally—many Kelowna courses offer views of orchards or vineyards, in addition, of course, to the lake.

3. Take a Hike

For many people, spring means hiking season. Specifically, it's prime time for chasing waterfalls as snow steadily melts all around the valley. Kelowna's picturesque trails vary significantly, so you'll find the perfect hike whether you're looking for a challenging all-day trek or something more kid-friendly. Right in town, you can check out Knox Mountain and Dilworth Mountain Park. To find raging waterfalls, head to Fintry Provincial Park, Hardy Falls, or Canyon Falls Park, all a short drive from downtown.

4. Go Biking

Experience Kelowna's stunning scenery from a different perspective: on two wheels. Hotel guests can borrow a complimentary bike from The Royal Kelowna, then pedal their way through one of several local trails.

The Rail Trail is easily one of the most popular Kelowna attractions, a route spanning 50 kilometres and traversing most of the city. Don't worry, you don't have to do the entire trail in one shot. Instead, do a section or two, stopping for a glass of wine or craft beer along the way.

5. Take a Helicopter Tour

Prefer to explore from higher up? For a truly unforgettable experience, take to the skies on a thrilling helicopter tour. Spring is one of the best seasons for this bucket list-worthy adventure because you'll get a bird’s-eye view of blooming orchards, snow-capped mountains, and shimmering valley lakes. Local outfitter Valhalla Helicopters even offers heli-wine tours, where you arrive in style at a few wineries of your choice.

6. Spring Festivals

Spring is the unofficial start of festival season in Kelowna, with events catering to every imaginable interest. Some of the most intriguing annual festivals include Amuse, a celebration of fine food and drink; KFX (Kelowna Fan Experience), the valley's version of Comic Con; the Kelowna Maple Festival; Kelowna Beer Festival; and the Knox Mountain Hill Climb

7. Kasugai Japanese Gardens

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city by heading to the tranquil Kasugai Japanese Gardens. Stroll through lush greenery, a koi pond, and waterfalls in this traditional Japanese garden. Starting in April, rhododendron blooms start to burst open, adding pops of pink and purple to the greenery.

Even outside the gardens, Kelowna comes alive with colourful blooms in the spring. Fruit trees blanket orchards throughout town, covering the region in pink and white flowers reminiscent of cherry blossoms.

8. Enjoy the Water

It may not be ideal beach weather quite yet, but you can still enjoy the lake in the springtime. The mild weather and lack of summer crowds create calm conditions, perfect for paddling around. Several local companies surrounding the Royal have kayaks and paddleboards available for rent, including the Kelowna Yacht Club.

Kelowna is known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culinary scene with a focus on ultra-fresh, hyper-local ingredients, and world-class wineries. In fact, this is the birthplace of winemaking in BC, and there are more than 40 wineries to explore, all within a short drive of one another.

Between the incredible wine and food cultures, gorgeous scenery, and luxurious accommodations at The Royal Kelowna right downtown, Kelowna really is the perfect destination for a girlfriend getaway for all four seasons

5 Reasons to Plan a Girlfriend Getaway to Kelowna

In addition to offering a wide array of experiences well-suited to a memorable girls' trip, Kelowna is also easily accessible. It's within reasonable driving distance from several major cities, including Vancouver (4.5 hours), Spokane, Washington (5 hours), and Seattle (5.5 hours), making it the perfect getaway for a long weekend.

Now, let's get into all the fun things to do in Kelowna during your trip.

Wine Tours

No girls' trip is complete without indulging in at least a glass or two of vino, and Kelowna's wine culture doesn't disappoint. As a major wine destination in the Okanagan Valley, the city has wineries dotting the lake with picturesque landscapes. Whether you prefer buttery Chardonnay, complex Pinot Noir, summery Rosé, or crisp sparkling wines, sampling the local offerings is one of the top Kelowna activities year-round.

Everyone in your group can choose a winery to visit or, better yet, book a guided wine tour. This option ensures you not only check out several of the best local wineries, but that you don't have to worry about the logistics or hassle of driving between them. Just show up with your gals, sit back, and literally enjoy the ride, and sample some of the Okanagan's best vintages at each stop!

As part of our Stay® | Well amenities program, guests of The Royal Kelowna can take advantage of discounted wine tours with Kelowna Concierge. This is a wonderful way to explore several vineyards without breaking the bank (more money for other activities on your girlfriend getaway!). Choose the wineries or part of town you'd like to visit, and you'll stop at either four (half-day) or five (full day) wineries. Full-day tours also include a lunch stop.

Proximity to the Lake and Beaches

Aside from wineries, one of the biggest Kelowna attractions—perhaps the biggest—is Okanagan Lake. Providing a picture-perfect backdrop, along with beautiful beaches and water recreation, the lake in its own right makes Kelowna a perfect getaway. Enjoy plenty of fun in the sun during your girls' weekend, whether you prefer swimming, or lounging on the sandy beach soaking up some rays.

The Royal Kelowna's ideal lakefront location offers some of the best water views and puts you literal steps from the beach. While there are dozens of fantastic beaches to choose from, one of the closest to The Royal is Tugboat Beach. Perfectly manicured gardens frame this stunning sandy beach, and it's adjacent to Waterfront Park and the boardwalk path. In the summer, you can rent paddle boats and catch live concerts at Waterfront Park Island Stage.

A Foodie's Paradise

Wine isn't the only thing you can treat your taste buds to in Kelowna. The city's vibrant culinary scene is top-tier, with everything from renowned farm-to-table restaurants to bustling cafes and hip brunch hot spots. Plan a girls' night out (or two!) around restaurant-hopping, indulging in gourmet goodies crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Be sure to sample some charcuterie—it's a huge thing in this farm-to-table city!

4-Season Outdoor Recreation

With fairly mild year-round weather, getting outside and enjoying some sunshine is one of the most fun things to do in Kelowna. Regardless of your group's interests, you'll find no shortage of outdoor adventures. In the summer and fall, hit the trails on foot or a bicycle, or take to the water. Charter a boat or rent kayaks or paddleboards for the day.

When the temperatures start to drop, plenty of snow activities keep you moving outside. Try snowshoeing some local trails, or head up to Big White Ski Resort to hit the slopes, go ice skating, fly down the hill in a tube, or check dog sledding off your bucket list.

Luxurious Waterfront Accommodation at The Royal Kelowna

There's no sugar-coating it: accommodation can make or break your entire vacation. Luckily, that's not something you have to concern yourself with at The Royal.

After a day of exploring everything Kelowna has to offer, retreat to the luxurious comfort of our all-suite, lakefront resort. Choose from 1–3 bedroom suites, including specialty suites such as loft and hot tub suites. Each one has a private balcony or patio, a fully-equipped kitchen, and in-suite laundry.

Other amenities that make The Royal a top Kelowna resort for a girlfriend getaway include the rooftop terrace with a heated pool, lake views, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, grills, and a fire pit, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and the neighbouring Playtime Casino. In all seriousness, we know Kelowna has a ton to explore, but you may not want to leave the hotel!

Finally, we mentioned our Stay® | Well amenities earlier, offering you even more perks during your stay. These include complimentary rentals of beach gear, bicycles, yoga mats, snowshoes, sleds, and more, plus discounted rates with local partners.
